Just then, I noticed someone moving slowly through tall grass behind me. As I pulled up my LeMat to face whoever it was, I heard the crack of a rifle, and a bullet zinged uncomfortably close to my head. I turned around and saw Lester, who was now facing me, rifle aimed at me. Then another crack of a rifle as Lester fell face-first into the slough with Sally May working his leg.
It wasn’t Dan who’d brought Lester down, as he had a shotgun.
Spinning around to meet the threat on my left, a slightly built man, clearly not Potts, shielded a man who had to be Potts.
“Alright, you. Put that LeMat down. Now!”
I slowly knelt, laying my LeMat on the grass.
Potts shoved his hostage to the ground and pulled his shotgun to his shoulder, upon which I heard another crack of a rifle.
Potts flew off his feet backward, tumbling down into a small channel.
I turned back around. About a hundred yards to the south on the shoreline, a man emerged from behind a large windfall. It was Mo. Crack shooter.
Inspecting Potts, I saw that the .40-65 Winchester had done as designed, tearing into and tearing Potts apart. It wasn’t pretty, but such is the life of lawmen and outlaws.
